Thiruvananthapuram: The fee regulatory committee headed by Justice R. Rajendra Babu will submit the revised fee structure for MBBS courses in self-financing medical colleges to the High Court on Friday. The revised fee structure was finalised by the committee on Thursday. However, the members of the committee did not reveal the fee structure as it is sub-judice. The fee structure will be made public only after the High Court ratified it, they pointed out. Sources said that the  fee structure would also have a unified fee for government and management quotas. Moreover, the new fee structure may not be  much different from that announced earlier.

The fee for MBBS course in private self-financing medical colleges for both government and management quotas was earlier provisionally fixed at Rs 5.5 lakh for the 2017-18 academic year by the committee. However, these colleges were  allowed to collect Rs 20 lakh in 15 per cent NRI quota. The government had re-notified the Kerala Medical Education (Regulation and Control of Admission to Medical Educational Institutions) Ordinance 2017 with amendments on Wednesday.

The ordinance stipulated that the fee regulatory committee had 10 members, but the committee appointed by the  government  had only six members. Following this, the medical managements had approached the High Court to quash the fee structure pointing out the discrepancies in the structure of the committee. The cabinet also approved new names to the committee as per the provisions of ordinance. The managements had also sought clarity  on the cross-subsidy to be given to students as the  Supreme Court ruling had indicated that there should not be any cross-subsidy on fees. The fee regulatory committee which had earlier proposed a fee of Rs 20 lakh for NRI seats had asked the managements to use Rs 5 lakh as scholarships for the poor students, instead of providing cross-subsidy.
