No end to overspeeding in Kozhikode
Overspeeding caused 313 accidents till June end.
KOZHIKODE: Most of the road accidents in the city are caused by speeding vehicles. This can be controlled only through enforcement, according to the officials of Motor Vehicles Department. As per the traffic police statistics, out of 763 road accidents that took place till June this year, 313 (41 percent) were caused by speeding. The department has taken strict action against speeding vehicles that are caught on the CCTV cameras installed at various spots in the city limit.
“In the last one month, action was taken against over 125 motorists for speeding, which had caused several accidents here,” said Mr C.J. Paulson, regional transport officer. In spite several warnings and actions, drivers, especially youngsters, are not bothered about road safety. Cars with the option to convert them to sports mode go at even 160 km per hour, he added. Social activist M.A. Johnson said, “speed limit signs have to be put up in areas like markets, industrial sites, construction zones and highways. The motorists should know the safe speed limit for a particular area,” he said. The police have collected crores of rupees as fines, but enforcement is the key to deal with speeding, he added.
