Hyderabad: Gandhi hospital lift victim dies in surgery
Pochamma had fractured her legs and hip in the fall.
Hyderabad: A 65-year-old woman who had fallen into the lift well at Gandhi Hospital on October 4, died on Thursday while she was being operated for a fracture she had sustained during the fall.
Pochamma had fractured her legs and hip in the fall. She was searching for a toilet and mistakenly opened the door of an under-repair lift. Shockingly, there was no signboard indicating that the lift was under repairs and she fell into the basement.
Pochamma was at the hospital to attend to her daughter Laxmi who was admitted to the gynaecology ward. Her son-in-law Venkatesh said, “She came here to look after my wife and instead fell into the lift and died. The hospital doctors say that she developed complications.”
A senior doctor said Pochamma was kept under observation as doctors wanted the leg region to recover before they could take up surgery of the hip. “She was recovering and her surgical profile also showed that she was fit for surgery. But on the operating table she developed complications and died,” the doctor said.
The family has demanded that action be taken against the hospital. Gandhi Hospital superintendent Dr J K Reddy said, “We are conducting an inquiry into it.”
The family has also complained to health minister Dr Laxma Reddy about the lax precautionary measures in the hospital due to which a woman needlessly lost her life.
