KOCHI: In a first of its kind by an educational institution, Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School, Ernakulam is initiating a water audit to assess the consumption pattern and quantity of water used in the school. SCMS Water Institute, which conducted the water audit for Kochi Corporation and Guruvayoor municipality, is conducting the audit for the school. “The water audit aims at creating awareness among the young generation over the importance of water conservation and to make the school as a ‘water – friendly’ institution,” said school authorities.

Estimation of water demand, consumption pattern, water resources and supply-demand gap will be assessed during the audit, which is being funded by the Rotary Club of Cochin. “By conducting the water audit, each institution can check the quality of water available, sustainability of water sources, details of water distribution network, reasons for decreasing water use efficiency.  Proposals to overcome scarcity will be the major components of the water audit,” said Dr. Sunny George, director of SCMS Water Institute.

“Through the audit, the school can increase the efficiency of water use and to convince students about the value of water. It will also help to prevent overuse and misuse of water. If all educational institutions can conduct water audit with the participation of students, it will significantly help in increasing the efficiency of water consumption,” said Susheel D Aswani, president of the Rotary Club of Cochin. Student volunteers will be working with the SCMS team and the audit report will be submitted to the school authorities in two months. As part of the water audit, classes on water conservation will be held for high school students.
