Cyclone Vardah: Restoration of power supply underway in Nellore

Power supply to several villages was disrupted due to strong gale winds, which uprooted electric poles.

People lifting uprooted poles following a storm in Chennai on Monday. The movement of traffic on several arterial roads including the famous Anna Salai, Grand Southern Trunk road were largely affected while several trees were also uprooted as cyclone Vardah made landfall near Chennai coast on Monday.

Nellore: In Andhra Pradesh, the district administration in Nellore is working on war footing to restore power supply in the cyclone hit mandals.

Power supply to several villages was disrupted due to strong gale winds, which uprooted electric poles.

Power supply was disrupted in 594 villages in 18 mandals and work has been going on in some parts of the coastal areas and 90% of power was restored in urban limits.

As many as 820 poles were damaged across the district and of which 598 poles have been restored.

About 220 poles in agriculture fields are yet to be restored.

Upland areas in Nellore district received 8.6 cm rainfall on an average due to cyclone Vardah and even though the rainfall has been very useful to the farming community, the cyclone has devastated vast tracts in coastal areas.

Cyclone induced rains damaged crops like banana and vegetables and about 30 to 40% of banana trees were uprooted due to strong gales.

Meanwhile, the reservoirs are constantly receiving waters from inflows in the upper areas.
