Dalit girl's death probe in right direction: K C Rosakutty

KOZHIKODE: SWC chairperson K.C. Rosakutty  visited Kuttiadi on Tuesday and held discussion with the police   officer probing the death of Athira Manoharan, 19, who consumed poison after she and  her colleague  were questioned by the police at the station in the wee hours of Friday.  Athira, a Dalit girl, and her colleague were paramedical staff of KMC hospital, Kuttiadi. “The inquiry is in the right direction. We have to find out what forced the  two girls to go out in the night,” she said. According to her, the police  quizzed the two girls and brought them to the police station in the presence of a woman civil police officer. On Monday, DCC president-designate T. Sidique had alleged that moral policing by the police was responsible for the suicide of the girl  and that they were quizzed without the presence of women police.

Athira   of Changanassery  and her girl colleague, who were riding a scooter, were questioned  by the night patrolling team at Kuttiadi town. According to the police, both the girls gave  different answers to their query  and, therefore, they were taken to the station. Athira consumed poison on Saturday  evening and died in the Kozhikode medical college hospital the next day. Rosakutty said that she would speak to the girl who was with Athira later.   She  also held talks with the hospital authorities. Crime branch DySP Jaison. K. Abraham is probing the case.
