BENGALURU: Prof. Sudesh V.  assumed office as in-charge vice-chancellor of Bangalore University on Wednesday. Prof Sudesh, who was Dean at the Faculty of Law, took charge from Prof H.N. Ramesh.

The post of a regular VC at the university has been vacant since Prof. Thimmegowda stepped down on February 6, completing his tenure. Prof Jagadeesh Prakash from the Department of Mass Communication took over as the in-charge VC the next day and served till March 31 after which Prof. M. Muniraju had taken over.

Activists said that it is unprecedented for any university in the state. “The state government is trying to get their favourites at top posts, including in the education sector. It is doing nothing but bad,” said an activist, requesting anonymity.

An official from the higher education department said that the government is waiting for a final word from Governor Vajubhai Vala to confirm either Dr K.R. Venugopal, UVCE principal, or Prof. Sangamesh A. Patil, Registrar of
Vijayanagara Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Ballari, for the post. “The state government is keen on appointing Prof. Patil, but the governor has sent back his files without any explanation. This has led to the current situation,” he said.
