BRS Facing Heat From Its Councilors in Several Municipalities

Warangal: After losing power, the BRS is facing trouble from its councilors in some municipalities. They are planning no-confidence motions against the chairmen and vice-chairmen of these municipalities in erstwhile Warangal and Karimnagar districts.

The Jangaon Municipality has 30 wards, of which the BRS had won 13, the Congress 10, the BJP four and Independents three. It was with the support of the independents that the BRS grabbed the chairman and vice-chairman posts there.

For the past two years, a cold war was going on between the chairperson and vice-chairman versus the BRS and the Congress party councilors. Heated arguments took place when a councilors’ meeting was held in the municipality.

The tenure of the councilors would end within the next 13 months -- by January 2025. BRS and Congress party councilors are busy trying to oust the chairperson and vice-chairman from their posts.

Meanwhile, some BRS party councilors as also Congress councilors held secret meetings separately. They decided to move a no-confidence motion against municipal chairperson Pokala Jamuna and vice-chairman Mekala Ram Prasad.

The councillor even went and took an oath in a temple that they would stand united and support each other for the ouster of the chairperson and vice-chairman.

The Vemulawada municipality has 28 wards, of which the BRS had won 16, BJP 6, independents 5 and the Congress one seat. Maximum number of councilors had supported Konda Srilatha for the chairperson post. But, with support from then IT minister KT Rama Rao, the chairperson post went to Ramatheerthapu Madhavi and the vice-chairman post to Madhu Rajendar.

Later, Vemulawada MLA Chennamneni Ramesh Babu encouraged Srilatha and other councilors to rebel against Madhavi. But, with resignation submitted by vice-chairman Rajendar following differences with Madhavi’s husband Raju, the issue that had seemed to subside came to the fore again.

Recently, around 21 councilors from the BRS and BJP including Independents decided to move a no-confidence motion against chairperson Madhavi, and in support of Konda Srilatha.

However, to overcome this crisis before the assembly elections, the chairperson’s husband Raju took some of the councilors to Goa on a pleasure trip.

In Narsampet municipality in Warangal district, chairperson Gunti Rajini of the BRS is also facing heat from her own party’s councilors. When some BRS councilors decided to move a no-confidence motion against her in June, BRS MLA Peddi Sudharshan Reddy intervened and convinced the councilors to hold back their decision.

However, with the BRS power in the assembly elections and the Congress candidate winning the Narsampet assembly constituency, some BRS councillors along with Congress councillors recently held a secret meeting and decided to move a no-confidence motion against chairperson Gunti Rajini.
