Woman cop to pay Rs 2 lakh for harassing techie, kin

Chennai: The State Human Rights Commission has directed an inspector of all women police station, Ambattur, to pay a compensation of Rs 2 lakh on charge of harassing and torturing techie and his family members five years ago.

In the petition, R. Babu alias R.Seshadri submitted that he was employed as a software engineer in Bengaluru. He got married to Barani and she started posing problems. When he left for USA on official duty, Barani created more problems with his family members and left the matrimonial home without any information. Later, he came to know that his wife lodged a false complaint before the All Women Police Station, Ambattur against him and his family members. He was forced to come back from USA.
D. Selvakumari, inspector of police, all women police station, Ambattur, summoned him to appear for an inquiry along with his family members. She had abused them using filthy language. Even after knowing a petition seeking decree of divorce has been pending before Additional Family Court -II, Chennai, Selvakumari, repeatedly directed him to appear before her for inquiry.
Apprehending arrest, they obtained anticipatory bail on April 15, 2014. Despite this, in the pretext of inquiry she forced them to appear in the police station for over a year.
Denying allegations, Selvakumari replied that on August 26, 2013, Barani lodged a complaint against Babu and his family members alleging they were torturing her and trying to kill her. A case was registered against them. She acted in accordance with law and never violated their human rights.
Judge D. Jayachandran said the inspector accorded inhuman, cruel and degrading treatment to them and this was unwarranted.
She conducted inquiry for a period of one year and as a result Babu had not only suffered loss of reputation but also faced mental agony.
The judge directed her to pay a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to the techie for violating human rights of Babu and his family members.
