Calicut University syndicate may put spoke in ex-VC's wheel
The recently held syndicate meeting has decided to refer the matter to the statutory finance committee to go into it further.
KOZHIKODE: The Left-majority syndicate of the Calicut University will oppose the sanction of the expenditure incurred as part of the use of additional vehicle for personal escort for former vice chancellor Dr. M. Abdul Salam. The recently held syndicate meeting has decided to refer the matter to the statutory finance committee to go into it further.
It is learnt that the syndicate will do the same vis a vis other such additional expenditure incurred during the tenure of Dr Salam. Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, one of the syndicate members said that the committee would not allow the sanction of such expenses which were made by the former VC flouting norms.
“Whatever additional expenses were incurred for Dr Salam’s enhanced security was without the consent of the syndicate. The audit department has also clarified and objected to it. He had made several other such expenditure not following norms. All such illegal expenses will be dealt with in the same manner,” the member said.
During the tenure of Dr Salam, the university witnessed a tumultuous period marred with several agitations over many issues. The personal escort was enhanced by the VC during this time. The total amount for the use of personal escort was Rs 4.4 lakh. The then UDF syndicate assigned a finance committee to give a report on the matter in March 2016. Though the report said that it could be approved, the present syndicate decided to put aside the matter for further study.
