Chennai Metro rail now serves St Thomas Mount too
On September 21, the Chief Minister inaugurated the St Thomas Mount Metro station along with the airport to Little Mount line.
Chennai: St Thomas Mount which has waited for MRTS services for very long, had metro rail services thrown open for commuters from 6 am on Friday.
“We got the clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) on Thursday evening and did not want to further delay the opening, so decided to let people use it from Friday ,” said a senior CMRL (Chennai Metro Rail Limited) official. Senior officials said that the project has seen a lot of delays already. “The elevated stretch is now complete from Koyambedu to St Thomas Mount,” he added.
On September 21, the Chief Minister inaugurated the St Thomas Mount Metro station along with the airport to Little Mount line. Now, including the 1.28 km stretch between Alandur and St Thomas Mount, 20 kms of the elevated line is functional from Koyambedu, and can be covered in 25 minutes. Residents near St Thomas Mount are happy about this latest service but demand reduced fares and a direct connection to the city airport.
With the Little Mount to Chennai Airport Metro line also functional, traffic on the route to the airport from the city bus hub CMBT can be beaten in a shorter time span.
