103 tech colleges in Telangana shut in 4 years
Colleges offering courses like engineering, pharmacy and MBA/MCA are either not able to fulfill AICTE norms or are seeking closure.
HYDERABAD: The number of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) approved colleges in Telangana has gone down by over a hundred in the last four years. Colleges offering courses like engineering, pharmacy and MBA/MCA are either not able to fulfill AICTE norms or are seeking closure on financial viability concerns.
As per AICTE data, Telangana had 774 colleges offering technical education in 2013-14. The number for the current academic year is 671, a decrease of 103 colleges. Educationist and former NAAC director V.S. Prasad, said, “When engineering education was considered as a prized study, many ventured into this field, establishing new colleges to make a quick buck. But not all of them could maintain high standards. Quality colleges are in high demand while those lacking it are shunned. Hence, seats remain vacant in such colleges,” he said.
President of MBA and MCA College Manage-ment Association Kota Sudhir said that unoccupied seats and demand for non-technical courses posed a challenge to technical colleges.
