Malappuram: Seven League workers held
Arrest for attack on CPM workers and for damage of property.
Malappuram: The Edarikkode Panchayath headquarters witnessed a ruckus on Wednesday when a group of Muslim League workers attacked CPM-led opposition members of the Panchayath council who were on an indefinite strike over an alleged corruption by the ruling party.
The police has arrested seven Muslim League workers and booked around 50 for rioting and damaging government properties. Panchayath president Abida Thaikadan, vice-president V.T. Subair Thangal and three civil police officers sustained minor injuries in a stone pelting during incident. A car of a CPM worker was also attacked besides damaging window panes and furniture at the panchayath office and nearby Krishi Bhavan. The incident took place at 10.30 am on Wednesday.
The strike by the two opposition members which was launched on Tuesday against irregularities in the fund allocation for the G.L.P School in Ambalavattom prompted the ruling party members to unleash the attack, alleged the opposition. The two CPM backed member had been on strike throughout the night on Tuesday which ended up in the clash between Muslim League and CPM workers on Wednesday. According to the police, Muslim League workers unleashed the attack without any provocation while the authorities were on a discussion with the striking opposition members to resolve the corruption issue. The attackers had used stones and iron rods, the police said.
