Thiruvananthapuram: 48 tonnes of glass waste collected during drive
The last plastic collection drive was in March.
Thiruvananthapuram: Thiruvananthapuram Corporation collected 48 tonnes of glass waste on Thursday, from various collection centres across the city. This is greater than what was collected in February. The Corporation had earlier promised to conduct inorganic waste collection drives every month, though it had not been able to stick to its word. The last plastic collection drive was in March. A slow-down of the plastic recycling industry in Tamil Nadu, aggravated by demonetisation, was quoted as the reason.
As the state does not have inorganic waste recycling units, Thiruvananthapuram Corporation has been dependent on agencies in Tamil Nadu which link it with recycling units. During the collection drive on Thursday, many turned up with tubelights. “They had to be sent away as it is not easy to store tubelight. Tubelights will be collected with e-waste,” says Sasthamangalam councillor Bindu Sreekumar. The following are the special counters where glass bottles, broken spectacles and other glass waste were deposited for the glass collection drive on Thursday.
Poojappura ground, Jagathy ground, Putharikkandam ground, Vanchiyoor court junction, Pipinmoodu junction, Kazhakkoottam ward committee office, near Beach HI office, Peroorkada ESI Hospital, and Vattiyoorkavu HI office. In March, there was a collection point at Journalist’s Colony, near NCC Nagar. This time however, there was no collection point here. Corporation officials said that this was added last time upon the special request of the colony residents, and this time no one requested.
