Paper wrappers on food banned in Kerala
The order was issued as per Section 30(1) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
Thiruvananthapuram: The food safety commissioner has issued an order prohibiting the use of newspapers and other printed material for wrapping, packing and serving food for a period of one year. The order was issued as per Section 30(1) of the Food Safety and Standards Act,2006 which gave the commissioner the power to prohibit the storage, distribution or sale of food articles that are unsafe.
Food safety commissioner Navjot Khosa, in an order pointed out that a risk analysis has found that this would cause chemical and microbiological contamination of food articles. This made the food unsafe and injurious to the health. The consumers are thereby being slowly poisoned, the order pointed out.
The order pointed out the Section 18(1) (a) of the Act endeavoured to achieve an appropriate level of protection of human life and health and the protection of consumer’s interest, including fair practices in all kinds of food trade with reference to food safety standards and practices. Further, the Section 29(3) the authorities should maintain a system of control and other activities as appropriate to the circumstances, including public communication on food safety and risk, food safety surveillance and other monitoring activities covering all stages of food business, said the order.
