ADILABAD: Adilabad police had to provide security to an overturned lorry with a load of tomatoes for a whole day to avoid passers-by and the locals taking away the vegetable that costs a princely sum due to its exorbitant price.

Currently, the kitchen staple is being sold at Rs 120 per kg in the market in the state.

Around 3 pm on Saturday, a lorry carrying a load of tomatoes on its way from Kolar of Karnataka to Delhi overturned when the driver lost control of the wheel while trying to avoid hitting an oncoming car at Mavala near Adilabad town.

On being alerted, the highway patrolmen with arms rushed to the spot and provided security to the consignment from being stolen. No one dared to try their hand at snatching away the tomatoes due to the heavy security. A local person said some women, who were passing by, got down from their auto and tried to do so, but backed off on seeing the armed officers.
