1,550-ft long national flag, big attraction at I-Day rally

KRISHNAGIRI: As many as 2,000 students and others carried a 10-ft wide and 1,550-ft long Indian national flag in a procession at Hosur, bordering the IT city of Bengaluru, to mark the 70th Independence Day celebrations in Tamil Nadu's western belt on Monday.

The event “Walk for the nation” was organised by the Vasavi club elite-Hosur. The Hosur sub-collector K.Senthil Raj, inaugurated the rally. Others, including Hosur municipal chairman Ramu participated.

In Krishnagiri, the district collector Mr C. Kathiravan hoisted the national flag at the district sports stadium here. Later, Kathiravan handed over welfare assistance to the tune of Rs 99.94 lakh to 108 beneficiaries here. He also honoured freedom fighters, 33 government staffs including nine policemen for their noteworthy service with certificates of merit.

In Dharmapuri, the district collector K. Vivekanandan unfurled the tri-colour, took salute and reviewed the guard of honour in the function held at the district sports stadium. Mr Vivekanandan also honoured the freedom fighters in Dharmapuri. He also handed over merit certificates to the government officials for their good performance.
