Fatalities due to Coronavirus continued to go up with 127 persons succumbing to the disease on Saturday, taking the total toll so far to 5641 in the entire State.

Fresh infections too were unabated as the State recorded 5860 cases with 1179 of them in Chennai, where the death toll was at 26.

The numbers in the nieghbouring districts of Chennai were high – Chengalpattu 376, Kanchipuram 184 and Thiruvallur 422 – while the other districts with high level of infection were Coimbatore 290, Cuddalore 340, Ranipet 260, Salem 200 and Theni 213.

Meanwhile, a new 50-beded Covid Care Centre was opened inside the Puzhal prison premises by the Law Minister C V Shanmugham and Health Minister C Vijaybaskar.

Of the 2014 prisoners housed in the three jails inside the Puzhal complex, 114 of them tested positive. They were treated at the Stanley or at the hospital inside the jail. Now the Care Centre with four wards – one for women and three for men – has been set up to take care of prisoners.

Tamil Nadu has a total of 1643 Care Centres and 54 of them are in Chennai.
