Chennai: Youngsters and residents of Besant  Nagar are upset with Chennai corporation, as engineers are playing spoilsport for beach games along Chennai coast.

This year, civic engineers have denied the annual permission given to the Chennai Ultimate Frisbee Tournament, an international event held during the first week of October. While the official reason cited by civic body is that the event is an environmental hazard, confidential insiders at Ripon Buildings admit that there is a lot of infighting happening between engineers over the recent transfers and promotions.

“This case is visible, when it comes to maintenance and monitoring of Marina and Besant Nagar beaches. Permission is not given for those who want to organise events along Chennai coast. Also, payments for old contractors associated with Chennai coast cleaning are kept pending,” said a union leader with Chennai corporation.

The dejected superintending engineers, who aspired for the post of chief engineers (3- posts) are creating controversies, wherever it is possible and also harassing their subordinates, the corporation staff said adding that commissioner D. Karthickeyan gave a dressing down to the engineers last week and the situation is better now.

“The top brass of the corporation has given green signal to the tournament last month with a piece of advice to ensure that the beach is not polluted and the public not disturbed. But things changed with the corporation transferring the local engineer. This year, the reason sighted by the engineer is funny for us”, said K. Mukhesh, an organiser.

About 200 players and the organisers of Chennai Frisbee tournament are unsure about the event. When contacted, corporation superintending engineer (special projects) S. Rajendran, said stakeholders of Chennai are not interested in beach games. Organisers want to put floodlights on the beach and that is violation of environmental norms.

Also, Olive Ridley turtles will start visiting Chennai coast next month. When contacted, Chennai mayor Saidai S. Duraisamy said he would “look in to the issue”.

Confidential Ripon Buildings sources also said there were several incidents in Chennai for which permissions were earlier given and now denied sighting technical reasons after the recent promotions of few engineers to post of chief engineer.
