HYDERABAD: Environmentalist Erik Solheim, former executive director of the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), and founder of the "Green Belt and Road Institute” participated in the Green India Challenge on Friday. Solheim planted saplings together with BRS MP Santosh Kumar as a part of the Green Initiative.

Solheim applauded the Green Cover Initiative of the state government and stressed that every state in India should adopt a plantation programme in the same spirit to contain pollution and carbon emissions.

Solheim, a former Norwegian minister, also called for restricting the use of plastic if not banning it altogether given its harmful impact on the environment.
