Telangana health department reports drastic fall in new Covid cases

The steep fall in cases over the past couple of weeks correspond with an equally steep reduction in the number of tests

Hyderabad: New Covid-19 cases witnessed a further drop on Sunday, with the state health department reporting 502 fresh Coronavirus infections, and three deaths. With these, the total cases rose to 2,57,876 and deaths from Covid-19 to 1,407 so far.

The steep fall in cases, nearly a half or more of those reported on weekdays over the past couple of weeks, correspond with an equally steep reduction in the number of tests. For Sunday, the health department said, only 17,296 tests were done compared to the around 40,000 a day during normal weekdays.

There were 14,385 active cases of Covid-19 as on Sunday 8 pm, and 11,948 infected persons were in isolation. As many as 1,539 persons were declared to have recovered from the disease on Sunday taking the total recovered cases to 2,42,084 thus far.

The Greater Hyderabad area, as it has been doing ever since the disease took hold in Telangana state, continued to have the most cases, even on a day when far fewer tests were done. According to the Covid-19 bulletin issued by the department, the GHMC area reported 141 new cases, followed by 72 in Ranga Reddy, and 33 in Medchal-Malkajgiri districts.
