Hyderabad: The Telangana Medical Services and Infrastructure Development Corporation and the Drug Controller have been alerted about the presence of a live insect in a saline bottle at Gandhi Hospital. The bottle will be handed over to the corporation.

The Telangana Doctors Association has been demanding that a panel of doctors be set up to check the quality of products procured by the government, but no action has been taken.

A senior doctor said, “the presence of a live insect indicates that there has been negligence during storage or when it was being administered. There is also a lining of fungus and the entire batch needs to be properly inspected."

Doctors had demanded a committee to check procurement of medications during the incident of Klebsiella bacteria found in saline at the Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital. A single doctor has been appointed but quality checks are still a major issue. A senior doctor said that after the Sarojini Devi Eye Hospital incident earlier this year, doctors had become very careful.

“Any sub-standard or ineffective medicines are being directly reported to the corporation as we do not want to be blamed for the quality of medicines and medicinal products,” he said.
