Three killed in soil collapse on Amaravati Road

VIJAYAWADA: Three workers were killed and two others injured at the construction site of a shopping complex on Amaravati road in Guntur city on Wednesday.

According to Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) officials, construction workers were carrying out earthworks for the construction of a shopping complex near Hindu Pharmacy College when heaps of soil collapsed on them.

Two workers Nasibul Mohammad (27) of Bihar and Majnu Shaik (34) of West Bengal died on the spot. Amit Seth (28) died while undergoing treatment in the hospital. Two other injured are undergoing treatment at Government General Hospital.

Guntur city mayor K. Manohar Naidu and GMC commissioner Nishanth Kumar inspected the spot. They said GMC has not sanctioned the plan for construction of the shopping complex. A charge memo has been issued to Assistant City Planner, Ward Planning Secretary and TPS.

Guntur sub-collector has ordered an inquiry into the incident.

The mayor and commissioner said the builder has been instructed to provide ₹ 10-lakh compensation to kin of each of three deceased. Arundelpet police have shifted the bodies for autopsy and have registered a case.
