Kalpetta: Ghat road curves work progresses

Kalpetta: The widening of the five narrow curves of Wayanad ghat road is progressing with the ban on the plying of big vehicles making the reconstruction easier.
Kozhikode district collector Seeram Sambasiva Rao had earlier banned big vehicles except buses through the road for two weeks from May 14.
The third and fifth curves were widened in the first phase. The tarring of the widened portions is on. PWD Minister G. Sudhakaran had shared the details of the procedures on his FB page the other day. The total project cost is Rs 6 crore. The 6th, 7th and 8th curves are yet to be widened. The state government had approached the union ministry of surface transport for the funds, Mr Sudhakaran said.
It may be recalled that the narrow stretches on the ghat road have been causing recurring traffic jams, particularly on the curves, for the last several months. The widening of three hairpin bends 6, 7 and 8 was delayed as the clearance for sufficient land from the union ministry of forests was delayed. Without sufficient forest land and funds, the other three bends could not be widened. The total project cost is Rs 19.75 crore.
