Distressed farmers of various villages in Bela mandal staged a dharna at Shivaji Chowk, demanding the state government to pay Rs25,000 per acre as compensation to farmers for crops damaged due to floods, on Wednesday. Farmers also urged the state government to order a survey to assess crop damage.

The protest was organised under the aegis of Adilabad Youth Congress general secretary Rupesh Reddy. Farmers and police officers clashed when the latter tried to foil the protest.

Addressing the gathering, Rupesh Reddy stated that farmers are on the receiving end of crop loss on a large scale as flood waters inundated their fields as well as the backwaters of the Penganga River.

Later, the protesting farmers and Congress leaders submitted a memorandum to the Tehsildar. Congress leaders, including former ZPTC Ramdas Nakle, former Bela market committee chairman Vaman Rao, Kisan Cell leader Ghan Shyam, senior Congress leader Rooprao and youth Congress leaders were present.
