VIJAYAWADA: An MBBS fourth-year student of NRI Medical College committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan at his home in Patamata on Monday night.

Police said Kamepalli Venkat Pranav Yashwanth, 24, lived with his grandparents while his parents stay in the US. On Tuesday, August 15, his grandparents chose not to wake him up because of holiday.

However, when the housemaid came and knocked on his door for cleaning, she found no response. She informed his grandparents, who used a spare key to open Yashwanth’s bedroom. They were shocked to find him hanging from the ceiling fan.

They informed Patamata police, who have booked a case of death under suspicious circumstances. No suicide note has been found. However, police found a letter addressed by Yashwanth to the registrar of YSR University of Health Sciences of June 21, 2023. In the letter, he said he had taken admission in the NRI Medical College under management quota in 2019, paying ₹33 lakh per year as per agreement. But he had been asked to pay an additional amount of ₹12 lakh.

Yashwanth charged that the NRI Medical College principal subject him to harassment and humiliation when he informed the principal that he would be unable to pay the amount. He said though he wanted to meet the college administrator to resolve his issue, he had been disallowed from meeting him.

Yashwanth appealed to the YSR University of Health Sciences registrar to take action against NRI Medical College authorities for harassing him mentally. As a result, he could not concentrate on his studies. He also requested the registrar to direct NRI college authorities not to take any action against him.
Patamata police are investigating.
