Kakinada: BC welfare minister Ch. Srinivasa Venu Gopalakrishna said Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has appointed Mohan Rao Commission to protect interests of the 146 castes belonging to backward classes in the state.

The minister said though BCs are having reservations, they are not at satisfactory levels. He maintained that the caste census will help in implementing reservations for BCs at all levels.

Venu Gopalakrishna said BC censuses have previously been held in 1872, 1901, 1911, 1921, 1931, 1948 and 1958.

Rajamahendravaram MP M. Bharat said the aim of caste census is to provide reservations as per the population of castes. He appreciated the CM for taking a historical decision in this regard.

MLC I. Venkateswara Rao said that caste census will help BCs get social justice.

Meanwhile, East Godavari district collector K. Madhavi Latha convened a meeting of BC caste leaders and people’s representatives at Rajamahendravaram on Friday.
