Human rights panel hears 19 cases

The human rights commission gave orders to the concerned officials to redress the genuine grievance, said D. Murugan, member of the bench.

Puducherry: A high-level delegation of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), led by its Chairperson HL Dattu held an open hearing in the Union Territory on Friday. In the one-day hearing, 19 cases were heard by the three-member committee.

According to D. Murugan, the member of the bench, several scheduled castes (SC) complainants received on the spot solutions to their problems relating to denial of rights.

Open hearing to provide an opportunity to the common man for taking up rights violation issues with constitutional authority. The commission gave orders to the concerned officials to redress the genuine grievance, said Mr Murugan.

The commission interacted with senior officials and directed them to give special attention in certain areas. The Commission also interacted with representatives of NGOs which put forth some complaints and suggestions.

The press has a special role to play to curtail rights violations, said Mr Murugan adding that the commission many a time took suo moto action based on media reports. “The Commission wants the Human Rights to be included in the school curriculum”, he said while answering to a question.
