Tirupati: The holy month of Dhanurmasam began with traditional fervour at Venkateswara Swamy temple in Tirumala on Sunday. As per custom, the 30 Tamil 'pasuram' hymns of Thiruppavai scripted by Goda Devi – one among the 12 Alwars – are being chanted daily in the temple during the early morning hours.

Dhanurmasam is considered one of the most auspicious months in the Hindu calendar, especially for Lord Vishnu devotees. The recitation of Thiruppavai verses is an integral part of celebrations at Tirumala temple and Vaishnavite shrines during this month.

The practice dates back centuries as per Vaikhanasa Agama traditions. Instead of the awakening Suprabhatam hymns, the Thiruppavai rendition marks the start of day’s rituals in the temple. The recitation is performed as an Ekantha seva with the Utsava murti of Lord Krishna being worshipped instead of the customary Bhoga Srinivasa idol.

After the hymns, the deities are offered Naivedyam and other ceremonies follow. The Dhanurmasam festivities will conclude on January 14, 2024 along with the final Thiruppavai chanting. The month is considered highly auspicious by devotees who flock to Tirumala hills for blessings.
