Kerala: Mechanical engineer stabs parents, ends life

KASARGOD: A mechanical engineer working in Coimbatore hacked five members of his family, including his parents, and ended his life at Nekraje in Badiadka panchayat of Kasargod district. Police said that Ashwin Kalluraya, 24, hanged himself after hacking his family members on Sunday afternoon. The injured father Sreehari Kalluraya, 56, mother Latha, 48, cousin Suma, 26, aunt Vanajakshi, 55, and grandmother Sugunamma, 75, were rushed to a hospital in Mangalore.

Ashwin and his parents were living in Coimbatore, and came to his grandmother’s home three days ago to take him for some treatment. Sreehari is a hotel manager. Police said Ashwin, the mechanical engineer working in Coimbatore, who hacked five members of his family, used a sickle to hack his grandmother first, and then Vanajakshi, his mother Latha and Suma.

When his father Sreehari intervened, he slashed his leg, and walked out of the house. Sreehari then dragged himself to the house of his neighbour Narayanan, who alerted the police and called an ambulance.

The condition of Sugunamma and Latha, who suffered injuries on head, is said to be critical. Five of them were first taken to a hospital in Kasargod and later shifted to Mangalore considering the seriousness of the injuries. Later, neighbours and police found Ashwin hanging from a tree near his house. Doctors declared him dead on arrival. District police chief Dr A. Srnivas said that in the preliminary probe, police found that Ashwin was mentally unstable. Badiyadukka SHO Damodar is investigating the case.
