Thrissur: The “Kudamattam” event of Thrissur Pooram this year witnessed a neck-and-neck contest with both the contestants, Thiruvambadi and Paramekkavu, exploring all possible options from plain golden-bordered velvet parasols, to the LED-lit hi-tech ones in a contest. Nearly 40 sets of umbrellas each were raised atop decorated elephants by both the “rival” camps as they tried their best to out play each other.

For the timely selection of different types of parasols, for the variety and novelty of designs used, and also for the subtlety and precision of imagery on parasols, Paramekkavu arguably went an extra yard in the tightly fought contest.
But the Thiruvamabadi’s parasol that depicted the paintings of Radha and Krishnan too won a lot of accolade from the “Kudamattam” buffs.

The first special parasol was raised by Thiruvambadi which was a cute cut out of Lord Unnikrishnan holding a bowl of butter to which the Paramekkavu replied at special umbrella with the shape of pineapple.
