Gear up for extreme temperatures

Chennai: Union territory Puducherry resembled a furnace on Wednesday, having recorded the highest maximum temperature of 42.7 degrees Celsius in the past five years.
The prevalence of strong North Westerlies from Andhra Pradesh has created a heat wave in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, said director of the Regional Meteorological Centre S. Balachandran.
The Wednesday temperature in the union territory almost touched Puducherry’s all-time highest temperature of 43.1 degrees Celsius, recorded on in May 23 and 30, 2003, said weather blogger Pradeep John, after analysing the old records .

Issuing a heat wave alert, the weather office forecast extreme temperatures for the next two-to-three days.

Chennai for the third consecutive day sizzled at 40 degrees Celsius, making it a humid day. Meenambakkam on the other hand recorded 42 degrees Celsius, as the sea breeze had not set in till 2pm.
Abnormal temperatures were also recorded in the temple town of Tiruttani, which recorded 44 degrees. Vellore recorded 43.4 degrees Celsius.
