Kerala High Court grants interim bail to T P Senkumar

Kochi: Kerala High Court on Monday granted an interim bail to former state police chief T.P. Senkumar against whom the crime branch of police registered a case on charges of promoting enmity between different communities. If arrested, he should be released on bail on executing a bond of Rs 30,000 and two solvent sureties for the like sum. The court adjourned the case to Monday. Police had registered a case under section 153 (A) (1) (a) of IPC. After his retirement on June 30, Mr Senkumar in an interview to a magazine made some controversial remarks allegedly against the Muslim community.
He said that Muslim community accounted for 42 per cent of the childbirths in Kerala whereas their population was 27 percent, suggesting that in future the state's demography will be altered if the present trend continues. According to Mr Senkumar, he never allowed to record any of his conversations, and as a friendly discussion he observed his opinion about ISIS an internationally banned organisation and expressed his anxiety over its growth in Kerala. According to him, the allegation that he had made any comments consciously promoting enmity between different groups on the ground of religion was absolutely baseless. He had completed his tenure as a disciplined officer and took utmost care to protect the integrity of the department suffering lot of personal humiliation and other harassment. He said he was apprehending arrest in the case hence filed the anticipatory bail petition. He also sought a directive not to permit those who are in power to harass him without any reason due to their animosity while he was in service.
