No medical college in Kerala offers low fees

Thiruvananthapuram: With MES Medical College Perinthalmanna, Malappuram and Dr. Somervel Memorial CSI Medical College, Karakkonam withdrawing from the agreement with the government, there is no medical college left which offers admissions to MBBS for a lower fee.  This means that all students to these colleges would also have to pay the Supreme Court fixed fee of Rs 5 lakh. Though, the two colleges have withdrawn from the agreement, the Commissioner for entrance examinations (CEE) website says that the fee for these colleges would be the same as that in the agreement with the government.

However, MES President Fazal  Gafoor told Deccan Chronicle that the agreement had become void once the Supreme Court verdict came into force. There was a provision in the agreement that it would become void in case of any legal intervention, Mr Gafoor said. Students would have to pay the fee fixed by the court to other self-financing colleges. “We had agreed to the suggestion that the seats in the minority quota would become general quota if these seats remained vacant after the second round. However, the government had issued an order stating that the fee for these seats would be that of the government quota. This was not acceptable to us. Our stand was that the fee for the seats should be the same as that of the management quota as applicable in the case of the community quota even if the seats are transferred to the government,” said Mr Gafoor.

CEE through an order gave students time till 3 pm on Friday to enable them to opt for courses with a revised fee of Rs 11 lakh for colleges that did not entered into an agreement with the government. Students have to pay Rs 5 lakh as fee and a bank guarantee for Rs 6 lakh as per the revised order. However, Christian Medical colleges have informed the government that they needed only Rs 5 lakh as fee for 85 percent seats in MBBS and Rs 3.29 lakh in BDS seats. CEE also issued an order on the minority community quota for Karuna Medical College, Palakkad, Kannur Medical College, Anjarakkandi, Kannur and Kannur Dental College, Anjarakkandi, Kannur to the candidates belonging to the minority community.

653 candidates  for NRI seats

Even though Fee Regulatory Committee headed by Justice Rajendra Babu has fixed Rs 20 lakh as the fee for NRI seats in medical colleges, 653 candidates have submitted applications for the 400-odd seats. The provisional list of candidates who seek admissions to the NRI quota was published by the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE). The 124 applications are withheld for lack of sufficient supporting documents.  The highest rank candidate who applied was ranked 1984 and the last ranked candidates 46,770. One candidate has been included on the list by the high court order.

The provisional list of applicants for NRI quota seats in Self Financing Medical and Dental Colleges was published on the website of the CEE on August 11. The final list came after the candidates sent the self-attested copies of documents to correct defects in submitted documents.  Accordingly, the revised list is available at www.cee-kerala.org and www.cee. kerala.gov.in.

The candidates should submit relationship certificate of the sponsor issued by the revenue authorities, overseas employment certificate from the employer attested by the embassy and if self-employed, also be attested by the embassy, passport with visa stamped on it and attested by the embassy and a self-affidavit of the relationship between sponsor and the candidate.  The sponsor should be an Indian/overseas citizen or a person of Indian origin and should submit the relevant documents to prove the same.
