Salem: Petrol sachets thrown at minister's meet, six held

The party cadres doused the fire immediately and rounded up the man who threw the packets.

Salem: Police arrested six persons and launched search for seven more persons for throwing petrol packets at state rural development minister, Edappadi K. Palanisamy’s public meeting near Salem.

According to police, the birthday celebrations for former chief minister C.N. Annadurai was organised at Jalagandapuram area near Salem on Friday night by the AIADMK. Palanisamy took part in the meeting and he was addressing to the crowd.

Suddenly, a man threw some petrol sachets on the stage. One of the packets fell on the amplifier system and immediately caught fire. The cadres fled the spot, while the party functionaries helped the minister to reach the backside of the stage safely.

The party cadres doused the fire immediately and rounded up the man who threw the packets. However, his aides fled the spot. Police identified the miscreant as D. Anandkumar, 30, from Sandhaipettai area in Jalagandapuram.

Following the incident, the minister cancelled the programme and left the spot.
Based on tip-off, police identified 12 more persons including some DMK party members, Anandkumar, Yuvaraj, 31, Meganathan, 30, Inbanathan, 36, Ilango, 28, Mani, 25, Venkatesh, 23, Raji, 23, Karthi, 21, Santhosh, 23, Iyappan, 26, Kalaiyarasan, 23, Suresh, 25, and Ranjith.
