KOCHI: In a novel initiative, a private hospital in the city has opened a transgender clinic with specialists and treatments exclusively for the third gender. It is the first of its kind launched by a private hospital in the state. Sunrise Hospital, Kakkanad, has launched ‘Identity clinic’ to provide holistic, high quality integrated health care to transgenders, gender non-confirming and intersex individuals. The clinic was inaugurated by Renju Renjimar, known makeup artist and secretary of Dhwayah, association of transgenders.
The multidisciplinary clinic offers services like hormone therapy, mental health services, surgical reassignment and procedures, and sexual and reproductive health. “Our protocols are designed to reduce the barrier to healthcare accessibility for third gender citizens, leading to longer, healthier and more productive lives.
At Identity clinic we have created a trans- affirmative environment that encourages patients to seek beyond just getting hormones and takes care of their health and wellness needs,” said hospital sources. The clinic will provide integrated care to transgenders in a comfortable and supportive setting with a commitment to respect the identity of each person. Appointments will be made on individual basis and specialists including gynaecologists, endocrinologists and psychologists will take care of the comprehensive healthcare needs of each individual.
