Jalanidhi project set to quench thirst of Elavally
Jalanidhi schemes are fine models for the success of people's participation.
Thrissur: The Elavally Jalanidhi Sudhajala Vitharana Padhati will be inaugurated by minister for local self government K.T. Jaleel at Thamarappilly Pannathukunnu at 2.30 pm on Saturday. It is designed to supply 1.42 million litres of water to meet the drinking water requirements of residents of Elavally gramapanchayat based on the estimated population in 2045. The scheme was designed by Jalanidhi under Kerala Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (KRWSA), a World Bank funded water and sanitation project implemented jointly by KRWSA and Elavally panchayat for addressing the water scarcity threat of Elavally gramapanchayat.
AWARD, an NGO based at Chalakudy was the support organisation to implement the project. Its work started in 2012 and it comes under the Batch I of Phase II Jalanidhi. As many as 3,012 households including 407 Scheduled Caste families of the panchayath will benefit from the scheme. The estimated cost for this scheme is Rs 11.30 crore. At present, Rs 8.24 crore has been spent on it. Out of the total expenditure, 75 per cent of funds were from Kerala government and 15 from Elavally panchayat. The remaining 10 per cent was contributed by the beneficiaries.
“The scheme has its own source, tanks and water treatment plant. The source of the scheme is a well dug near the Koombully KLDC canal. Two tanks with capacity of 1 lakh litres and 3.75 lakh litres were constructed at Pothen Master Kunnu and Ponnathu Kunnu respectively. The treatment plant of the scheme is situated near the Gandhi Smaraka Samiti at Ponnathu Kunnu. The water will be distributed through 113 km of newly laid distribution system,” said Abdul Latheef K.V.M., regional project director of KRWSA.
