Thiruvananthapuram: NGO claims harassment by cops for backing stir

Thiruvananthapuram: The representatives of NGO Jwala Foundation accused police of persecution for arriving in front of Secretariat to offer support to the parents of Rudra who were staging a strike demanding a probe into the death of the toddler. The female founder of NGO was also among the four people taken away in the police vehicle which had no women police constable. After taking the gang to cantonment station the police asked them not to support the strike of ‘touts’ and people engaging in ‘immoral activities’.
“On the 391st day of the strike by Rudra’s parents, we had arrived here to offer support. Congress leader V.M. Sudheeran was here and he had left the venue after the inauguration. As soon as we showed up, police took us into custody in an attempt to break away what they claimed to be an unlawful assembly,” said Ashwathy Nair. “Why are police afraid of Facebook fraternity offering support to Rudra and Sreejith. The police has been hampering our rights to give support to their strike,” she added.
Interestingly, a few days back, a police intelligence officer had gone to the NGO’s office posing as a journalist. The activist had raised a complaint before city police commissioner P. Prakash. Meanwhile, Cantonment Circle Inspector Prakash told Deccan Chronicle that he had just called the activist to station for a small friendly talk. “They are just blowing up things out of proportion. No case has been registered against them,” said M. Prasad.
