KOCHI: The Muvattupuzha Vigilance Court has asked the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) to register a case and conduct a detailed investigation into the complaint against IG Manoj Abraham of amassing wealth disproportionate to his income. Enquiry Commissioner and Special Judge P. Madhavan ordered to assign an officer above the rank of a superintendent of police to conduct the probe on the petition filed by P. P. Chandrasekharan Nair of Pathanamthitta and report its progress in every three months.

The VACB director has been directed to register the case under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The petitioner alleged that Mr Abraham misused his position to stop illegal quarrying in Pathanamthitta and conducted numerous foreign trips, constructed a mansion in Thiruvananthapuram and amassed properties in Kerala and Karnataka which were sponsored by these businessmen.

The charges include irregularities in the purchase of arms for the India Reserve Battalion. It is also alleged that the illegally acquired money was mostly invested with the St. Mary’s group, which is connected to his wife. A quick verification earlier by the VACB had revealed that excess wealth of the officer was 25 percent of his known sources of income which was later contested by the petitioner who said that Mr Abraham had a disproportionate wealth of '61.85 lakh which is 31 percent of his known income.
