Relatives of Mufeed and Muneer, victims of road accident, hand over the first set of books to Panur SI M.S. Faizal on Friday.

Kannur: Panur is known for bombs and explosions, not for  books. However, the police personnel at Panur station will  launch a reading corner in a building close to the station with the  support of the public who  have donated books worth  Rs 40,000 till date. The major share has come  from the family of two accident victims - Mufeed and Muneer- who died three years ago. District police chief G. Siva Vikram will open the reading corner in April, said Panur SI  M.S. Faizal.

“The reading room will be  set up in the hall near  the police station. Apart from  fiction and other books, magazines and reference books for competitive examinations  would also be available.  At least one book should come from each person in the station limit,” said Mr Faizal. The idea to set up a reading corner started following  the recurrent incidents of blasts and seizure of explosive materials in the station limits.  Monthly peace meetings chaired by the station house officer were held in the presence of the local representatives of political parties.

These talks were initiated by the district administration last year.   The family of  Mufeed and Muneer, who died  in an accident at  Panur three years ago,  had formed a trust in their  names and   donated '25, 000 to buy books and reading materials for the station. NGOs and public also provided  books. Regular training sessions by experts for competitive examinations will also be held here,  said Mr Faizal.
