KOZHIKODE: At a time when drought is at its peak, water is leaking from the water supply pipes of the Kerala Water Authority at Karaparamba, Vengeri and other nearby areas. Though the leakage began one month ago, the failure of the authorities to fix it has resulted in the wastage of valuable drinking water which is draining into the Canoly Canal. The corroded pipelines which are ancient have not yet been replaced and that is causing frequent pipe breakages and consequent leakages, according to localites.

Shamsudheen Kuniyil, a resident of Karaparamba, told DC that the pipeline had sprung leaks over the last 15 years. “Now it has increased and the scarcity of drinking water also is increasing”, he added. Last month after receiving a series of complaints about the leakage, water authority officials visited the spot many times, promising to repair the leakage. But nothing has materialized so far. Abdul Rasheed, another resident complained that “even after giving about 25 petitions to the water authority, no action had been taken”. Residents hope the water authority will replace the outdated pipes.  KWA official Shalini told DC that it was tough to rectify the holes in the pipes and that was the cause for the delay in taking action. “Moves are on to fix the leakage which will be cleared as soon as possible”, she added.
