Calicut University researchers spot relics of pre-historic era

KOZHIKODE: The researchers of Calicut University (CU), during their explorations in Parambathkavu near Valanchery in Malappuram district and Mepperikunnu near Ambavalavayal, Wayanad, have hit up on remnants in the form of small cupules or cup marks that shed light into the pre-historic era, according to a press statement of the CU history department. Calicut University history department head Sivadasan told DC that such 'cup marks' are rarely seen in the state. Tracked to the early Stone Age, such marks were also found during excavations at Muthalamada, Piralimattam and Mattidampara.
The history workshop, namely 'Windows to Past' organised recently by the department of history at Parambathkavu had unearthed remnants which were used by those who lived during the 'microlithic age'. Experts have opined that these cup-marks will shed light into the art-forms, arms and tools using stone, music, rituals and leisure of the men in the past, Mr Sivadasan said.
These archaeological evidences need serious research, in-depth study and further excavations in the respected areas, he said. The researchers and experts are worried about the increasing number of laterite mines in the area. There should be serious efforts to rein in the mining activity in the region as it would damage the remaining unexplored archeologically rich spots, Mr Sivadasan said.
