CM Pinarayi Vijayan charges SDPI with political violence
The Opposition also demanded a probe by a special investigation team to unearth the conspiracy behind the murder.
Thiruvananthapuram: The Opposition staged a walkout from the Assembly on Monday alleging that the government was soft towards the SDPI and that the police were favouring the SDPI workers held in connection with the murder of Muslim League worker, Nazarudeen, at Kuttiyadi the other day.
The Opposition also demanded a probe by a special investigation team to unearth the conspiracy behind the murder. Both the UDF and the LDF alleged that the SDPI was promoting brutal violence. Replying to an adjournment motion notice given by IUML’s Parakkal Abdulla, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan alleged that the SDPI was carrying out attacks in the name of politics. All political parties should condemn such attempts, he said.
While Mr Vijayan accused the UDF, indirectly hinting at the IUML, of having alliances with the SDPI, Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala said that an analysis of the voting patterns of the recent elections in places like Kuttiyadi and Vatakara would reveal that the LDF had gained in SDPI's strongholds.
“It was owing to this nexus that the SDPI workers held in the murder case were even served biriyani at the police station, while the IUML workers held for staging a protest were brutally assaulted,” he said. Mr. Vijayan said that the government would look into the demand for a special investigation team to probe the murder. Speaker P. Sreeramakrishnan denied permission for the adjournment motion.
No political colour to murder: SDPI
The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) on Monday strongly condemned the remarks of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan that it trains its cadres to kill.
SDPI state general secretary P. Abdul Hameed said that the adjective fits Vijayan's party. “Our party will protect no worker involved in the murder of the IUML supporter in Velam," he told a press conference here.
"The party will never approve of such heinous acts. Personal enmity and other issues led to the murder, and it should not be treated politically. There was no political tension in the area. Even the IUML admits that.” He added that the issue was later blown out of proportion and was used politically. “We have taken action against the people who were arrested in the murder case,” he said.
