HYDERABAD: Environment minister A Indrakaran Reddy appealed to the people to opt for eco-friendly clay idols for Ganesh Chaturthi which will be celebrated on September 19. The Pollution Control Board (PCB) will undertake a campaign on the subject in educational institutes.

Speaking after releasing a poster on the topic at the PCB office, the minister stressed on the importance of using immersing the idols in retention tanks. “Using desilted clay for making Ganesha idols is an annual festival support activity. The clay goes back to the lake from where it is desilted. Let us use clay from the retention tanks and make idols and immerse them back in the retention tanks.”

He urged people to compost the flowers and herbs that are used in the puja, and not immerse non-degradable material into clean water bodies.
