Hyderabad: Environmentalists demanded a judicial enquiry into the irregularities which led to land of the Nadem Cheruvu lake in Ghatkesar being mortgaged, as there would have been political pressures on executive bodies.

Environmentalists including Prof. K. Purushotham Reddy, P. Srisailam, Sudershan Reddy, G. Balaswamy, MPP, Ghatkesar mandal, and B.V. Subba Rao, thanked the government for ordering an inquiry into the matter but sought an independent judicial inquiry on the revenue officer concerned and other personnel responsible for the scam.

Taking cognisance of the report in these columns, ‘Land in lake mortgaged for Rs 13 cr (November 15)’, the state government had ordered a probe.

The land was mortgaged after the mandal revenue officer (MRO) issued a no-objection certificate. Individuals obtained a Rs 13-crore loan to build a warehouse while the bank and the MRO did not inspect the land physically, and the HMDA did not grant building permission.
