KOZHIKODE: The pumping of wastewater from establishments,   including prominent hospitals,  into the Canoly canal, once the lifeline  of the city, has made it a  filthy drainage. This is happening at a time the district administration is on with many  projects to put new life into the canal to improve water quality and environmental ambience.   Countless business establishments located on the  sides of  the canal have been opening up their drainages into it.

A survey conducted by the district administration to collect the details of wastewater outlets into the canal  identified 163 points. District collector U.V. Jose who has turned his focus to the Canoly renovation project after the SM Street renovation, told DC that strict action will be initiated against all establishments soon.

“We had a detailed socio-economic-environmental survey on all aspects of the project with the help of volunteers headed by experts,”  he said and added that now the ball was in  the court of  the municipal corporation  which is empowered to take action. The Pollution Control Board (PCB) also has set  a  time frame for corrective measures and prepared  an action plan for each establishment.  Notices will be issued to  them  by the end of this month giving  two months’ time to implement the corrective measures, it is learnt.
