Anyone going through the street is free to read newspapers, magazines.
Thiruvananthapuram: In a unique initiative, a reading corner where newspapers and magazines would be provided at Manaveeyyam veedhi began from Sunday. Anyone passing by is free to pick them up for reading. The newspapers will be placed in specially developed holders using PVC pipes fitted into the wall. The reading corner is an initiative of www.aksharamonline.com with the support of Manaveeyam Theruvidam Culture collective, Center for Film and Gender and Culture Studies.
K.G. Suraj, of Aksharamonline told Deccan Chronicle that the reading corner would provide daily newspapers for reading. In due course, periodicals and books would be added. There would be discussions and debates on books and social issues. The staging of plays, filmshows and cultural activities were also planned, Mr Suraj said.
The initiative was part of the move to convert the corridor into a true cultural space. Already, cultural initiatives like street plays and folk-song performances are held in the space regularly. The place is also one of the meeting points for artists and writers in the city. An art installation to commemorate EMS Namboodiripad on the occasion of his death anniversary was also held on Sunday. The installation is led by Sumesh Bala, winner of the Lalithakala Academy Award.
