Criminals little ahead of cops: IPS Sanjay Kumar Gurudin
Cyber activities go unchecked.
KOZHIKODE: Despite reports of blue whale challenge ending in people taking their own life, there is no mechanism to monitor cyber activities in Kerala. Earlier there was an attempt to link internet centres in each city to the server of the cyber police. They had also conducted a series of discussions with them. But the project was left midway as a some refused to be part of the network. Sanjay Kumar Gurudin IPS, who wrote a book ‘Is Your Child Safe?' about cyber world, told DC that it was high time we had a reliable surveillance mechanism.
“But the police is not that much equipped. Cyber criminals are little ahead of us,” he said.
In Kozhikode, police had also collected the data of internet cafes functioning in the city and rural. As per the old records of police, there were 289 internet cafes in the city limit alone. Later there came a direction from police to them to register whereabouts of the user and their mobile number and ID proof. But Special Branch officials say that only a few follow the guidelines. Many internet centres are functioning near colleges and schools where groups of children under 18 come on the pretext of some assignment and enjoy porn films.
