Bengaluru: On the International Men's Day on Saturday, the city celebrated the yang part in society. "We believe that men aren't appreciated as a gender and always fall prey to a tag," said Mr Sumedha, a member of the Save Indian Family Movement, Karnataka.

"Men have a positive role to play, not only in a woman's life but also in each other's. Yet, they are hardly appreciated. When they are, they are either a father or a brother or a husband, they are never just men, as just themselves. We want to change that," he said.

The celebration is also an opportunity to raise awareness against fatal diseases that affect men exclusively, but are not discussed or known about, like prostate cancer, he said.

"Breast cancer affects women in earlier stages of their life, but diseases like prostate cancer affect men in later stages where they are financially not as stable as they would have been when they were young. Men who have these issues also receive a lot less funding than patients with breast cancer. This isn't an anti-women's movement, but our goal is to spread awareness. That is the reason we targeted the youth this time," he said.

Students from 25 colleges participated in the celebrations with hashtags like #MensDayBlr, #BeardOrStache and #SelfieWithHero showing their appreciation to the men who are a part of their lives, he said.
