Visakhapatnam: Convict slits his throat in open court hall

Visakhapatnam: A 27-year-old man, R. Appala Naidu made a suicide attempt by slashing his throat in an open court hall in Vizag city on Monday.

The Metropolitan Session Judge S. Nagarjuna sentenced Appala Naidu and six others to 14 years imprisonment in a ganja smuggling case under NDPA-Act.

Severely injured Naidu was rushed to KG Hospital in Vizag city where his condition is said to be critical. Appala Naidu is a resident of MK Patnam area in Vizag district.

Naidu along with seven others were arrested by Kothakota police in October 2016 for smuggling around 300 kgs of dry ganja. Naidu was released from the central prison on bail, said Kothakota sub-inspector D. Sekharam.

The judge acquitted two persons and convicted six accused in the case and slapped a fine of Rs 1 lakh each. Upset with the judgement, Appala Naidu decided to end his life, Vizag Two-Town police station Inspector G.V. Ramana said.
